PHYSICS DEPARTMENT

Aims & Objectives of the department, Mission:

Since fundamental principles of Physics form the very basis of Engineering and Technology, the department, therefore, aims at providing the necessary knowledge of Physics to the young engineers. The main activities of the Department are Under-graduate teaching, Post-graduate teaching and Research.

Undergraduate Teaching

In the Ist  and IInd semester, the students of all B. Tech branches are given compulsory courses in Physics while a number of courses are offered as Non Departmental Electives in the 7th & 8th semesters.

The Department offers curricula consisting the basic principles of Physics besides emerging areas of Technology so as to provide necessary background to future Engineers.

Post-graduate Teaching

The department runs a four-semester M.Tech programme in Instrumentation. The programme is shared by other departments viz, Electrical Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electronics and Communication Engg. and Computer Engg. The inputs are the candidates having the degree of M.Sc. (Physics), B.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation Engg. or M.Sc Electronics. Further, the department in running a four-semester course in Nano-technology. Other details can be found in the Institute’s Brochure and Website. The Department has a vision to launch in future B.Tech in Engineering Physics and M.Sc in Applied Physics in order to meet the global technical demands and create a need based technical man power. It is proposed to set up quality labs in these areas. All initiatives have been made to procure, for example, Scanning Electron Microscope with EDX/EDS, besides other sophisticated instruments. Recently procured items include Sputtering Unit, Digital Electrometers, Constant Current/ Voltage sources etc.

Recent activities and programs undertaken

Master of Technology (Nanotechnology) has been started w.e.f. 2006 and M.Sc. (Physics) is to be started in the forthcoming session i.e., July, 2008.
